Norwegian experiences in Ukraine

ENGLISH
The national team of norway just returned from Ukraine. They describe the terrain as "not that special" but certainly not norwegian. They are planning some trainingcamps in South Sweden, Danmark, France and Portugal where they think the terrains are similar to Ukraine.

NEDERLANDS
De Noorse nationale ploeg is net terug van een trainingsstage in Ukraine. het terrein werd er niet al te speciaal bevonden, maar het terrein is zeker niet noors, de Noren plannen nog trainingen in Zuid Zweden, Denemarken, Frankijk en Portugal waar er gelijkaardig terrein te vinden is. Allen daarheen!

NORSK
Typisk norsk er skogen derimot ikke i Ukraina, men O-landslaget skal på samlinger i Sør Sverige, Danmark, Frankrike og Portugal hvor lignende terreng finnes. Den siste VM-samlinga er i Kiev i månedsskiftet juni-juli - en drøy måned foran mesterskapet.(

VVO = KOL + 2 ??

Naar jaarlijkse gewoonte is er een slechte communicatie omtrent kandidaten seniorenploeg. Wat nieuw is is dat er nu maatregelen worden getroffen met financiële gevolgen, wat neer komt op een boete. De boete houdt in dat aan degenen die zich niet "op tijd" hebben opgegeven er ook geen geld wordt gespendeerd.

Verrassend is dat buiten de "A-statuut geselecteerden" enkel KOL'ers zich hebben opgegeven. Hoe en door wie dit is gebeurd is een vraag die makkelijk kan beantwoord worden in een "comment".

Andere vraag is of alle A-statuut geselecteerden zich wel degelijk hebben opgegeven. Eveneens iets dat kan nagegaan worden. Er zou hieromtrent dan ook consequent moeten worden opgetreden, d.w.z. ook de geselecteerden die zo toevallig een A-statuut konden verkrijgen krijgen toch een C-statuut wegens niet opgeven.
Een boete wordt toch ook gegeven aan iedereen die door het rood licht rijdt, of hoeven degenen die met een porsche rijden dit niet te betalen??

Wat VVO wenst te bereiken is een beter engagement aangaande "invullen van documenten (whereabouts, opgeven als kandidaat,...)". En hier hebben ze ergens een punt.

Maar wat bereik je met boetes als deze? C-statuut kandidaten gaan zelf op stage op eigen initiatief, gaan zeker niet mee op stage met VVO want de prijs die ze ervoor moeten betalen is nauwelijks in te schatten, maar waarschijnlijk hoger dan dat ze zelf iets organiseren (de coach moet worden betaald). Dat net terwijl de interesse in stages van VVO-senioren moest worden opgekrikt krijgt het dus een extra deuk.

Ook VVO zou al eens een les moeten hebben getrokken uit voorgaande jaren. In andere landen wordt het opnemen in de seniorenploeg beslist door de trainers. In vlaanderen wordt het beslist door het al of niet sturen van een mailtje.
Voor 2008 stel ik voor dat de taak van "het opgeven van kandidaat seniors" wordt overgelaten aan
- ofwel "de seniorentrainer"
- ofwel één verantwoordelijke per club
Voor 2007 stel ik voor dat de regeling herbekenen wordt... de VVO-stages zouden wel eens kunnen uitdraaien in KOL-stages.

Andersson replies to Gueorgiou.

With Thierry recently talking about the things that happened between them at the World Cup relay in France on his website, David Andersson gives now a reply on his own website.
Here a translation of what he has to say on the incident:

“This year’s season has been succesful and I feel I am on the right track for the future. It was of course a disappointment not to achieve my goals at WOC in Denmark, but with highlights as EOC gold in the relay, Swedish champion relay, as 2 individual 4th spots at the World Cup final in France, I have even managed to get a star like Thierry Georgiou loose focus!
Thierry has described the final moments in the World Cup relay in France on his website , we both mispunched at the second last control. This mispunch was one of the many mistakes I have made the last half year (missed a control, mispunched, broken shoe). These sloppinesses is something I’ll start working on for next season. For the rest I have learnt something about tactics for the final moments in a relay: I definitely function better in a more offensive role as at EOC relay than in a defensive role as I had in France. And, even if you have won 3 World Cup races in a row, you can fail…” from David Andersson's website


Thierry’s side of the story (from his website) :

“After four really good individual performances, I was wishing for a last good race on this terrain. But with the relay, I ended my week with a spectacular crash…. "
He then goes on: “…. I saw then the back of a Swedish runner (David Andersson) and immediately remember what our coach Petter Thoresen told us at the end of the European Championship's relay : Never loose again against a Swedish runner.
Once in the area of control 20, I was maybe preparing already too much the final last meters when I saw a control. I punched it without checking the code. What a mistake.
Game was over, and the end of the course belongs thus to anecdote. Meanwhile going to the last control, I stopped in the middle of some green area, and David Andersson said to me “you can continue 'cause I will follow you anyway…”. I felt a little bit angry and decided to try to stick to Petter’s sentence…”

I guess this is not the first story of things happening and being said between runners when ending up together in the forest....

Thierry Gueorgiou tells his story

Thierry (Foto l'Equipe) is the best orienteer in the world this year. He proved this by winning the world cup. He could only do this by winning all three events at the world cup in France.

Today he tells his story at his website in the article "Hard work always pays off". It's very interesting to see how he prepares a certain leg in sprint race.
He also describes the mistake he maid in the relay and which words were said between him and David Andersson.

Blodslitet

Emil Wingsted won the ultralong distance race Blodslitet in Norway. He had been in the leading group with 7 for a long time. In the sprint(photo) he was faster then Anders Nordberg. The Swiss Dominik Koch ran in to third spot.

Anne Margrethe Hausken won the womens class. Because of the gafflings she ran away from the leading group, and in the end she was 2 minutes in front of Marianne Andersen. Third was Marianne Riddervold.

Olav Lundanes and Ingunn Weltzien won the junior classes.

SLOK bestaat 5 jaar en dat wordt gevierd

De Studenten Leuven Oriëntatie Klub, of meestal kortweg SLOK genoemd, bestaat 5 jaar! Waar oriënterende studenten zich in het buitenland wel vaker groeperen tot echte studentenclubs (vooral in Groot-Brittannië waar bijna elke universiteit zijn eigen club heeft bv. Oxford, Cambridge, Newcastle, Dublin, Nottingham, Edingburgh...), was dit in België nog niet het geval.

De talrijke oriëntatielopers van alle Vlaamse clubs die de voorbije vijf jaar in het Leuvense vertoefden, zullen zich nog de talrijke oriëntatie-activiteiten (of daar toch soms een verre variant van...) herinneren. Menig VVO-loper sponsorde ook de kas van SLOK door deel te nemen aan de jaarlijkse sprintwedstrijd, nachtwedstrijd of fiets-OL. Hierdoor konden er het hele jaar door gratis talrijke initiaties en trainingen georganiseerd worden.

Het begon allemaal in het academiejaar 2001-2002. Er was een grote lichting junioren die voor de KULeuven of GroepT kozen om hun diploma te behalen. Elke donderdagavond werd er afgesproken aan de 'kotmadam' om het Leuvense nachtleven te verkennen. Maar ook gezamenlijke duurtrainingen in Heverleebos en Meerdaalwoud bleven niet uit. Elke dinsdag opnieuw nam Olivier De Smul bovendien de groep op sleeptouw in een stevige 5*1000m, want met die lange duurtrainingen alleen zouden niet volstaan... het is daar dat de kiem van wat SLOK is geworden, is ontstaan...

Er werd begonnen met wat initiaties hier en daar en de minibus van de sportdienst van de KULeuven werd maar al te graag gereserveerd om op verplaatsing te gaan trainen of deel te nemen aan een wedstrijd of kampioenschap. Sinds SLOK werd er opnieuw gestreden voor de titel van Vlaams of Belgisch studentenkampioen oriëntatielopen...

In de loop der jaren werd de kalender van SLOK steeds voller en momenteel wordt er het hele academiejaar wekelijks één of meerdere initiaties, trainingen of wedstrijden georganiseerd. Een buitenlandse stage (in het verleden Tsjechië, Spanje en Denemarken) is daarbij het toppunt van het jaar. De aankoop van een stel SILVA-nachtlampen met de steun van de sportdienst van de KULeuven maakt sinds vorig jaar mogelijk dat er ook in de winter kan getraind worden op daarvoor onverlichte boswegen...

Dankzij de KULeuven sportgids met oplage van 40.000 exemplaren werd de bekendheid onder de studenten sterk vergroot. Vele nieuwe geïnteresseerden kwamen proeven van de sport op de initiaties en andere trainingen. Ondanks het feit dat enkelen vanuit SLOK de weg vonden naar een aansluiting bij een echte VVO-club, verliep de doorloop grosso modo niet vlot. Transport om vanuit Leuven of het ouderlijk huis op de wedstrijd te geraken was vaak een beperkende factor. SLOK trachtte daar zo goed mogelijk aan tegemoet te komen door af en toe eens een minibus in te leggen naar één of andere wedstrijd (waar de tienbeurtenkaart van VVO dan ideaal was voor zo'n beginners) en recent werd ook een carpool-emaillijst opgericht. Toch lijkt er een groot potentieel verloren gegaan, al zullen sommigen onder hen in de toekomst misschien eens sneller aan een wedstrijd deelnemen.

Maar om terug bij de titel van het verhaal te komen, SLOK bestaat 5 jaar en dat wordt gevierd met een jeneveraflossing volgende week dinsdag 24 oktober op de kaart van Arenberg. Inschrijvingen staan open voor iedereen en moeten gebeuren per email naar jeroen.hoekx@student.kuleuven.be. Massastart is om 18u15 dus zorg dat je om 18u daar bent. De laatste info verschijnt zo snel mogelijk op www.orientatie.org/slok. Aansluitend kan je nog een bezoekje brengen aan het jaarlijkse sporttoppunt van de KULeuven : de 24urenloop.

NEW micro-O concept in Belgium: THE DARK ZONE

This sunday a nice event will be held in Zelem (Belgium).
The new kind of micro-O concept is called "The dark zone".

About 15 controls will be placed in this zone which is in the circle of the control. But you only have to punch those on your control description. In this example you need to punch 4 controls which are control 5 till 8.

Wrong punching will mean a time penalty. It's a very new format of orienteering, very interesting to see how this will work out.

Saturday 25 November 2006; 14h. a new concept of orienteering will be presented in Lille (Rijsel) :the orient-show.

The Best athletes of France and Belgium will be present here. Thierry Gueorgiou, Damien Renard, Fabien Pasquasy, ...

The distance of an orient-show is between 100 and 400m, and winning times are less than 5 minutes. The area is mapped at 1:500. There will be 3 rounds, and the final will be amongst the 4 best. Who will be the best in these supersprint races?


Saturday morning there will be a middle distance and sunday a long distance as well, A very nice orienteering weekend.

Hoekx snelste op Sporen-kampioenschap

Jeroen Hoekx maakte brandhout van de hele Vlaamse subtop. Zelfs de revelatie van de jongste world cup Joost Talloen moest 3 minuten toegeven. De technische terreinen en de vele duinenformaties van de Sahara in Lommel waren duidelijk spek voor de bek van Jeroen Hoekx. Ook Hoekx senior ging met de overwinning lopen. We vragen ons af welke pot moeder Myriam gisteren heeft gestoofd. Al moeten we er bij vermelden dat 'De Sahara' een van de favoriete trainingsoorden van vader en zoon Hoekx is.

In de damesreeksen stonden Tiny Dams en Greet Oeyen op het hoogste schavotje.

Bij het officiële kampioenschap was Johan De Coninck de snelste. Henri Van Briel moest voor het tweede jaar op rij genoegen nemen met de tweede plaats. De uittredend kampioen Dieter Sels werd derde.
Bij de vrouwen ging de overwinning naar Ellen Mols. Francine Mols en Joni Baete werden tweede en derde.

Preview Vlaams Kampioenschap voor studenten

Zondag 29 oktober vindt het jaarlijkse Vlaamse oriëntatie kampioenschap plaats voor studenten plaats. Parallel wordt er ook een regionale wedstrijd georganiseerd door KOL. Er werd geopteerd voor de oostelijke zijde van de kaart met enkele technisch uitdagende zones van klein reliëf en talrijke vegetatiegrenzen, omgeven door een uitgestrekte heide.



In het verleden domineerden vooral studenten van de KULeuven en GroepT de erelijst, en ook dit jaar leveren zij weer het grootste aantal favorieten. Wie houdt Thomas van der Kleij dit jaar van de overwinning? Bij de vrouwen is het vooral uitkijken naar de prestatie van Saartje Sallaerts van KHLimburg, de winnares van vorig jaar.

disaster for small federations

Some thoughts about the new rules which haven't been changed after the general IOF assembly this saturday.

• Which runner has the highest level? Pierre Kaltenbacher (8th of Austria) or Pavlo Ushkvarok (2nd of Ukraine)?
• Belgium can send only 1 athlete to next world cup season unless we send some runners to WRE-events.
• How shall we select this one runner??

We have the Bel-ranking with a new leader: Pieter Hendrickx. But Jan Gilot and Fabien Pasquasy are at nearly the same level. Maybe it's not difficult at all to make a selection. Trainer picks out one of these 3 and that's it.

• How shall we send the athlete to the competition, with or without a coach?
• Is Belgium still interested in World Cup or is it to expensive to send only one runner?

Focussing on WOC and WRE-events seems the only solution to keep the bunch of young talented athletes motivated. WRE-events in similar terrain as WOC 2007 or 2008 are good opportunities.

The best athletes of Belgium are planning to focus only on WOC for next season. Probably some countries will not send any runners. Can we still call it a WORLD cup?

• Will we ever see news items like these at WOC in Danmark: "26 nations represented in long distance final Posted by Clive Allen on July 30, 2006 at 21:01"? Not for a World Cup in my opinion.

25 Manna is een van de grootste aflossingen ter wereld. De aflossing ging zoals gewoonlijk door in de buurt van Stockholm. Dit jaar deden er 350 ploegen mee, goed voor zo'n 9000 deelnemers.


Het Finse Kalevan Rasti kon net zoals vorig jaar de overwinning mee naar huis nemen. Ook zonder Thierry Gueorgiou als slotloper dus. De Zweedse clubs Södertalje en Stora Tuna eindigden beiden binnen de 2 minuten.

Jec Sprint

Miek Fabré bevestigde haar mooie prestatie van de lange afstand en werd weer 10e. Ook Johan Goubeau en Saartje Sallaerts deden het goed met een 15e en 17e plaats. Onze Sprint kampioen Jochen Verdeyen stelde toch een beetje telleur. Alle ogen waren op hem gericht, maar met een 24e plaats kon hij zijn schitterend WK niet helemaal bevestigen.

Gueorgiou Misspunched, Finland on top

Interview with Thierry Gueorgiou : "It's a big mistake (the misspunch) that destroys the result of all the team. It was going to be a good relay for me but I tried to shake everybody off after the spectator control and lost about 2 min on the following controls after a big mistake. Then i caught again the norwegian guys and David Andersson. But i made a second mistake... to get focus on the sprint too early instead of focusing on the next control to punch. I felt i was too much on the left but saw a control and i got there to punch it, but it looks like it was the women one.

This promotional video gives an awesome preview of the maps and terrains that are going to be used for the 2007 Waitangi Weekend Orienteering competition in Taupo, New Zealand, next year February.

The program is pretty packed with a Long Distance, Middle Distance, Sprint Distance, Middle, Regional Relay, Sprint and a Loop Race in 4 days, so it's gonna be great!
With the best New Zealand runners present, and probably some Australians and Europeans it promises to be an exciting race.

2 races even are World Ranking Events so it’s a great chance to improve your World Ranking while most of the Europeans are still training in the snow :)

Junior European Championships - Switzerland

While the seniors are competing for the final standings in the World Cup in the extreme terrains in France, most of European promising young juniors are competing at JEC (Junior European Cup) in Switzerland. There is definitely a good competition with a lot of countries present, with Sweden being one of the absent countries. After JWOC this competition probably is for a lot of the juniors the 2nd most important race of the year, although it is pretty late in the season.
The programme for the weekend is: Long Distance on Friday, Sprint race on Saturday in the city of Spiez and the team Relay on Sunday.

As you can see, in the 20’s categories the Scandinavian runners are impressively on top while in the 18’s we can see more of the Central European runners on the podium. A very good Belgian result of Miek Fabre in 10th spot in the W18.

WC Middle Distance: "Finish line"

Rémi Gueorgiou (France) sets a first really strong time of 35'25". Next top runner is Johan Modig (Sweden). He had some fast splits but in the middle part he lost some time to Rémi. 37'19" is the second best time.
Jörgen Wickholm and Tero Fohr(Finland) are the next strong guys from finland to arrive. But First some Belgian runners arrive with a good time.
Fabien Pasquasy and Christophe Bernard arrive in a time of 40'19" and 40'03". Oleksandr Kratov (Ukraine) is faster than anybody else. He was already fast in the qualification race, his time: 33'42".
Gernold Kerschbaumer (Austria) arrives... he gets 2nd spot at that moment and will be the best Austrian runner.
We have to wait for Carl Waaler Kaas (Norway) to have a new leader. He is one of the many strong NTNUI-runners of Trondheim. He must have seen Tue Lassen (Danmark) in the forest but lost about 1 minute at the end. Tero Fohr (Finland) can't do the same as at the finnish championships. His time is good: 33'34", but not good enough to win today. Baptiste Rollier (Switserland) is a bit faster than Tero, but Carl Waaler stays in front. Jon Duncan (Great Brittain) sets a strong time: 33'43". Øystein Kvaal Østerbø (Norway) and Mats Haldin (Finland) arrive together, both in a disappointing time. The norwegian lost about 5 minutes in the beginning. David Andersson (Sweden) arrives just behind these two runners, his time will be hard to beat: 31'10". He must have been flying through the forest.
Now only good runners will be at the finish line. Niclas Jonasson (Sweden), Damien Renard (France) and Pasi Ikonen (Finland) are a bit disappointing. Jarkko Huovila (Finland) gets very close to David Andersson. Emil Wingstedt (Sweden) loses lots of time... more than 10 minutes. Holger Hott Johanson (Norway) and Valentin Novikov (Russia) arrive together... have they been running together for a big part of the course? Novikov sets a really good time: 29'45" more than one minute faster than the previous leader. Only 2 runners to arrive. And they again arrive at the same time. Thierry Gueorgiou (France) and Daniel Hubmann (Switserland). Guergiou again is the best today, after a clear victory yesterday. He is more than 1 minute faster than Valentin: 28'28". Daniel could slipstream into 3th place. It is Gueorgiou who wins the world cup 2006. Of the three races this week the middle distance probably was the hardest to win... halfway it was still Novikov who had the lead, but Gueorgiou is the King of this forest; described as the most difficult terrain in the world by many runners.

Joost Talloen was de beste Belg vandaag met een 57e plaats op bijna 50 minuten. Fabien Pasquasy(Foto) werd 60e en Nicolas Sillien 66e. Door het zeer technische terrein waren de verschillen enorm groot.

Thierry Gueorgiou en Simone Niggli waren outstanding vandaag. Ze maakten de concurrentie gewoon belachelijk. Nummer 2 & 3 in de Wordcup, Daniel Hubmann en Emil Wingstedt verloren 34 en 36 minuten.

De Belgen konden geen topresultaat neerzetten op de Word Cup Sprint vandaag. De beste Belg was Nicolas Sillien(Foto) met een 58e plaats op een goeie vier minuten, kort gevolgd door Joost talloen(62), JF Krier(63) en Fabien Pasquasy(65). Christophe Bernard en Michel Bastin werden respectievelijke 74e en 78e.

Christophe Bernard gaf kommentaar op de frso-site:

"De Sprint vond plaats rond het kasteel van Theix, in een bosrijk en meestal hellend terrein. De wegkeuzen langst de paden waren duidelijk de beste manier om de groene zones te vermijden. Er moest constant snel gelopen worden en zeer snel georienteerd worden om technisch geen tijd te verliezen. Op het eind van wedstrijd wemelende het van de rotsen.

De resultaten van het team zijn eerder aan de magere kant: wij hebben duidelijk een gebrek aan training voor dit soort 'galopade', en maakten te veel onvergeeflijke fouten. Fabien had een mooi resultaat kunnen neerzetten als hij geen grote fout had gemaakt naar de 5e post..."

Thierry Gueorgiou maakte zijn favorieten status helemaal waar. Hij was 8 seconden sneller dan Daniel Hubmann en hele 40 seconden sneller dan Jarko Huovila.

Bij de vrouwen zagen we deze keer geen Simone Niglli. Ze ging duidelijk de mist in en moest anderhalve minuut prijs geven op Heli Jukola. De Zweedse Emma Engstrand werd tweede op 7 seconden.
