Qualification 'Match interland'

In two months (18/03) FRSO will organise 'the match'. It's an international competition between federations from England (EOC), the Netherlands (NOLB), Germany (WTB), Belgium north part (VVO) and Belgium south part (FRSO). This year, the match is also a world ranking event; one week before springcup an excellent competition to start of the season 2007. The match is organised on the map of Latin cup 2006 and national championship long distance in Belgium 'Libin'.
Everyone is free to start at the WRE and obtain some points to improve on the ranking. But 'the match' is a seperate competition for those federations. So it's important that every federation selects its best runners. The event consists of 7 different categories: H/D12-14, H/D15-17, H/D18-20, H/D21-35, H/D40-45, H/D50-55, H/D60+. Every country selects 3 runners for every category. So in a team we have 42 runners (21 women and 21 men).
Last sunday (28/01) VVO (north part of Belgium) organised a qualifying competition to select their runners. The 2 best runners are qualified for sure and the 3th runner will be appointed by the federation. A lot of good runners were present at this competition organised by omega on the map 'Dilsenerbos'. If we take a look at the elite and junior class, we see the next results:

The 2 best runners in each category are already qualified, the 3th one + reserve runners still have to be appointed by VVO. Maybe all the runners still have a 2nd chance next sunday (04/02). Because then everyone will run the Flemish district championship long distance: the first championship of 2007.

Nederlands:
Vorige zondag is op de kaart Dilsenerbos de selectiewedstrijd georganiseerd voor de interland. Dit is een internationale wedstrijd tussen verschillende federaties uit: Engeland, Duitsland, Nederland, Wallonie en Vlaanderen.
De resultaten van de elites en junioren zijn hierboven terug te vinden. De eerste 2 lopers zijn al zeker geselecteerd. De derde loper + reserven worden nog aangeduid door de federatie later.
Misschien is er volgende week op het Vlaams kampioenschap lange afstand nog een kans om de goede vorm te bewijzen. Want enkele lopers waren aanwezig op de Karrim'hoc en konden zo hun kansen niet verdedigen.
Verder is ook de selectie van de Nederlandse concurrentie reeds bekend. Die is terug te vinden op bovenstaande link (in het engelse verslag). Ook wordt er hierboven een klein overzichtje gegeven van de Nederlandse elite-lopers.
De interland zelf wordt blijkbaar toch niet op Chiny gelopen zoals anonymous verklaart bij de comments: 'Uit goede bron heb ik vernomen dat de interland NIET op "Les Tailles des Prusiens" (Chiny) georganiseerd word. Er zal worden gelopen op de kaarten die werden gebruikt voor de LatinCup (Saint-Hubert - LatinCup viel toen gelijk met het BK Lang in Louftemont).'

Belgian elite runners don't prove their good shape in physical testrun

Our last post was a little more positive than this one. Last week, a physical testrun was organised by Wim Peers (nickname: Piejes). This (ex)elite runner has a nice (orienteering)palmares: in 2000 he became 78th in the overall world cup. Now he invited all the flemish elite and junior runners to prove their good shape on a nice track. On the picture below the right route is visible. A part of the track is offroad, so the organiser had to take care that nobody could lose the right direction.
Because of all the work by the organiser, it was a pitty that only 2 elite runners showed up. That explains the title of this article. Fortunatly most of the junior runners found some more time to be present.
One of the main (and acceptable) reasons of the absence is that some members of the team are still students. And this period they all have to try to pass their exams and need their time to study. But we still can take a look at the results and compare them with the results from 2006.
Below the results of 2007, one round was 3300m, total time in 'bold' and splittimes in normal size.

Conclusion: The juniorteam run a decent testrun, especially Jeremy Genar and Yannick Michiels proved their psysical shape. If they keep on training, we can expect nice results in Sweden (jwoc 2008). Because the belgian juniorteam will skip the trip to Australia this year, and prepare better for Sweden 2008. Also Saartje Sallaerts run a good test, she ended only 1 minute slower than Greet Oeyen (ranked 224th on the WRE-list).
If we take a look at the small resultlist of the senior team; Wannes Hendrickx made a big progress if you compare his result with the one of 2006. I don't think he has WC-ambitions this year. But this performance proves that he's training hard and that he's really motivated to improve. Also Greet Oeyen was running faster, but we have to admit that her track was shorter compared with last year (2 rounds instead of 3). But last year she was ailing with an injury, and now she's on her way to the top again. Keep up the good work.


Nederlands: de weetjes:
Vorige week organiseerde Wim Peers, alias Piejes, een fysieke test op het terrein van de witte bergen voor zowel het junior als het senior team. Voor sommige leden van het senior team viel deze datum nogal moeilijk, voor velen omwille van de examens. Ook van hen zijn we overtuigd dat ze deze periode aan hun basisconditie aan het werken zijn en er dit jaar weer willen staan.
De junioren daarentegen waren wel talrijk aanwezig en lieten zien dat ze over heel wat potentieel beschikken. Op fysiek vlak ziet het er alvast zeer goed uit, als ze nu via wat technische stages, ook al orienterend deze goed vorm kunnen laten zien, dan kunnen we nog iets verwachten van het junioren wereldkampioenschap in Zweden volgend jaar.

Om te eindigen nog een citaat van Walter VK, die met zijn uitspraak waarschijnlijk vooral het goede werk van Wim Peers wou benadrukken:
'Looptijden van de fysieke test zijn beschikbaar. Met dank aan Wim.
Gelukkig waren er een hele boel junioren zodat de inspanningen van Wim niet beperkt bleven tot de 2 aanwezige seniors.'
Of zat er misschien toch een vleugje cynisme in deze uitspraak? Ik denk nochtans wel dat de meeste senioren heel wat voor de sport over hebben, zeker als ik zie hoe hard er in Leuven door bepaalde elites nog getraind wordt, ondanks de examens en ondanks 'de erkenning' door krijgen van maar een C-statuut. En in deze periode moeten er prioriteiten gesteld worden en kan bv. de verplaatsing naar een fysieke test wel tijdsverliezend zijn. Inderdaad jammer voor de organisatie, maar wel aanvaardbaar...

Belgian elite runners prove their good shape in cross country

Last sunday (14/01) in Mol 'Zilvermeer', a lot of good runners were present for an international cross country meeting. The best Belgian and some talented Ethiopian runners showed up at the startline.
The circuit was tough with a lot of sand aorund a recreation-lake (we also have an orienteering map of these terrain). The long distance cross (9,5km) was dominated by the little Ethiopian Abyote Guta. Other runners in the head of this cross were Gahungu (Burundi), Gizynski (Poland) and 2 belgian athletes: Desmet and Stroobants. In the background Pieter Hendrickx run a good race and finished 27th. He's one of the fastest belgian orienteers and proved this fact with his 20th place in WOC sprint in Danmark.
In the short distance cross participated still an other young Belgian elite runner Etienne Van Gasse. His most famous orienteeringresult was his race in 2005: he took the 5th place in WC sprint in Subiaco (Italy). In Mol he finsihed on the 14th spot 50 seconds slower than the best runner: Tasame Dame (Etiopian).

Zoals hierboven in de uitslag te zien is zijn vorige zondag 2 Belgische toporienteurs gestart in de Crosscup manche in Mol. In het losse zand rond het zilvermeer (een naam die vele orientatielopers bekende in de oren moet klinken) kwamen vele bekende Belgische veldlopers aan de start. In de lange cross eindigde Pieter op 4min van de Ethiopische winnaar. Etienne Van Gasse eindigde in de korte cross (logischerwijze) nog dichter, namelijk ook 50seconden. Een mooie prestatie van beiden, en een teken dat ze goed voorbereid aan het nieuwe orientatieseizoen zullen beginnen.
In de uitslag bij de masters vinden we ook nog een 3e orienteur terug. Guido Verdeyen eindigde hier mooi 10e, zo liep hij 6,45km in 23'16.

The Belranking is a national ranking computed according to the IOF world ranking rules. In 2006 30 competitions spread over the year were selected for this ranking, divided in three classes: LOW (regional events), MEDIUM (national competitions) and HIGH (championships). The 5 best results are considered for the ranking. The ranking, although not a goal on itself, provides a very nice overview of the Belgian athletes’ performance during the last year.

Pieter Hendrickx proved to be the most successful runner this year thanks to his victories at the Belgian championships sprint and middle distance and a second place at the classic distance. These excellent results together with his 20th place at WOC sprint make 2006 an unforgettable year to him. Last season was not a good one to Fabien Pasquasy (e.g. he had to miss WOC due to an injury) but he still ended very closely at the second place, followed by Jan Gilot, the winner of the Belgian championships classic distance. Remarkably, top 3 of H21E is clearly separated of the rest of the ranking.

Greet Oeyen won convincingly in D21E with 1 first and 2 second places at the Belgian championships. Veerle Tulleneers and Kim Geypen complete a Flemish top 3. Aline Hermans resumed competition in late summer after her pregnancy and still ended at a fifth place. Junior Miek Fabré ended at the 6th place.

New Zealand orienteerer almost murdered by a criminal

Kate Rea, a member of the New Zealand Junior Team, is lucky to be alife!

A few days ago, Graeme Burton, a criminal who is already on the run since before christmas, left one man dead and four others wounded on the hills above Lower Hutt.
Two of those wounded people were Kate Rea and her dad Nick.

Nick suffered a broken nose and Kate was hit in the neck by shrapne
Police have released further details on the capture of convicted murderer Graeme Burton, saying four people were injured and one killed before they shot down the fugitive on a bush track in Lower Hutt last night.

When he was captured Burton was on a mountain bike armed with a shotgun. Detective Senior Sergeant Shane Cotter said police shot him in the leg and he was now in hospital but his injuries were not life threatening. He did not fire when captured by police.

Kate and her father were mountain biking and they said they encountered Burton on the track.
Kate told the police Burton said: "There's one guy already dead back there you want to co-operate."
Detective Senior Sergeant Shane Cotter says one of the injured cyclists is in a serious condition, and Burton is under guard in Wellington hospital.


We are very glad that Kate survived this horrible adventure and hope this doesn’t stop her for future training. Kate, who is a member of HVOC (Hutt Valley Orienteering Club), was selected for Jwoc this year in Lithuania.

Coming soon: Hanny Allston and Heli Jukkola racing each other in New Zealand

In a couple of weeks (3-6 February), the second WRE (1st one is in Portugal) of the new year will be held in New Zealand. It looks like it will be an interesting competition with 2 TOP10 ranked women taking part!

The World Sprint Distance Champion, Hanny Allston (AUS), has entered Waitangi. Hanny has had some great results over the last year, including being the first non-european participant to win the Junior World Orienteering Championships (JWOC) in the long distance. Hanny is also the first competitor to ever win both a senior and junior World Championship in the same year.
The W21E grade is definitely taking good shape. Along with Hanny is another female ranked in the top-10, being Heli Jukkola from Finland. Heli is currently ranked 4th in the World, having recently at the last round of the World Cup in France won the sprint distance. She is consistently in the top 10 results of all major events in the World.
Other competitors to make this grade very competitive include Tania Robinson, who holds the record for the most NZ titles in W21E. Tania is currently the NZ Long and Middle distance Champion. To go along with that is Penny Kane who is the current NZ Sprint Champion in W21E. The W21E Long Distance Champion from Australia is also coming over, being Anna Sheldon, as well as Grace Elson who is the Australian Sprint and Middle Distance Champion.
Adding further to the field is a strong group of juniors from 2006, which includes Amber Morrison (NZ W20 Long Champ), Lizzie Ingham (NZ W20 Sprint Champ), Tineke Berthelsen (NZ W20 Middle Champ) and Vanessa Round (Aus W20 Long and Sprint Champ). Also the remainder of the Australian Bushrangers and NZ Test team will make the field very strong, potentially the strongest female field seen since the World Cup in '94!

The M21E grade also looks very promising with Tero Fohr as the highest rank Male entered.
Fohr is currently ranked 30th in the World and placed recently at the World Cup round in France 10th in both the Sprint and Middle Distance events. He is also the middle distance champ from Finland (2006).
The next highest ranked male to enter is Carsten Joergensen (DEN) who has a ranking of 50th and is the current NZOF High Performance Manager.
