Belgian elite runners don't prove their good shape in physical testrun

Our last post was a little more positive than this one. Last week, a physical testrun was organised by Wim Peers (nickname: Piejes). This (ex)elite runner has a nice (orienteering)palmares: in 2000 he became 78th in the overall world cup. Now he invited all the flemish elite and junior runners to prove their good shape on a nice track. On the picture below the right route is visible. A part of the track is offroad, so the organiser had to take care that nobody could lose the right direction.
Because of all the work by the organiser, it was a pitty that only 2 elite runners showed up. That explains the title of this article. Fortunatly most of the junior runners found some more time to be present.
One of the main (and acceptable) reasons of the absence is that some members of the team are still students. And this period they all have to try to pass their exams and need their time to study. But we still can take a look at the results and compare them with the results from 2006.
Below the results of 2007, one round was 3300m, total time in 'bold' and splittimes in normal size.

Conclusion: The juniorteam run a decent testrun, especially Jeremy Genar and Yannick Michiels proved their psysical shape. If they keep on training, we can expect nice results in Sweden (jwoc 2008). Because the belgian juniorteam will skip the trip to Australia this year, and prepare better for Sweden 2008. Also Saartje Sallaerts run a good test, she ended only 1 minute slower than Greet Oeyen (ranked 224th on the WRE-list).
If we take a look at the small resultlist of the senior team; Wannes Hendrickx made a big progress if you compare his result with the one of 2006. I don't think he has WC-ambitions this year. But this performance proves that he's training hard and that he's really motivated to improve. Also Greet Oeyen was running faster, but we have to admit that her track was shorter compared with last year (2 rounds instead of 3). But last year she was ailing with an injury, and now she's on her way to the top again. Keep up the good work.


Nederlands: de weetjes:
Vorige week organiseerde Wim Peers, alias Piejes, een fysieke test op het terrein van de witte bergen voor zowel het junior als het senior team. Voor sommige leden van het senior team viel deze datum nogal moeilijk, voor velen omwille van de examens. Ook van hen zijn we overtuigd dat ze deze periode aan hun basisconditie aan het werken zijn en er dit jaar weer willen staan.
De junioren daarentegen waren wel talrijk aanwezig en lieten zien dat ze over heel wat potentieel beschikken. Op fysiek vlak ziet het er alvast zeer goed uit, als ze nu via wat technische stages, ook al orienterend deze goed vorm kunnen laten zien, dan kunnen we nog iets verwachten van het junioren wereldkampioenschap in Zweden volgend jaar.

Om te eindigen nog een citaat van Walter VK, die met zijn uitspraak waarschijnlijk vooral het goede werk van Wim Peers wou benadrukken:
'Looptijden van de fysieke test zijn beschikbaar. Met dank aan Wim.
Gelukkig waren er een hele boel junioren zodat de inspanningen van Wim niet beperkt bleven tot de 2 aanwezige seniors.'
Of zat er misschien toch een vleugje cynisme in deze uitspraak? Ik denk nochtans wel dat de meeste senioren heel wat voor de sport over hebben, zeker als ik zie hoe hard er in Leuven door bepaalde elites nog getraind wordt, ondanks de examens en ondanks 'de erkenning' door krijgen van maar een C-statuut. En in deze periode moeten er prioriteiten gesteld worden en kan bv. de verplaatsing naar een fysieke test wel tijdsverliezend zijn. Inderdaad jammer voor de organisatie, maar wel aanvaardbaar...
