Report, map and results Belgian relay champs 2011

Last sunday the Belgian relay champs took place in Sterrebeek. It was a nice and tight competition. The organisation was very good: perfect map, nice arena, a speaker, spectatorscontrol (which was maybe a bit far away for the spectators),... The only comments i heard was about the courses. They were really fast and technically not the most demanding. In mens class most of the runners succeeded to finish their race without any mistakes.
Also about the forking i heard some little critics. The forking was very different sometimes (controls which were located far away from each other) which didn't create much contact between the runners. But mainly all participants were very positive about this relay champs.

Favourit KOL won in men elite class:
Thibaut Derenne was dominating the mass start and went into the forest as leader (it was the first and last thing we heard from him and his team). Ken Peeters (Trol1) was the next leader and showed up as first at the spectatorscontrol, closely followed by all the favourits. At the first change over we had Kol1 with WOC runner Tomas Hendrickx already more than 1 minute ahead of Trol1 with Ken Peeters and Gert Claes (Kol2) in 3rd position, another surprise was Hamok2 (Benjamin Anciaux) as 4th in front of Hamok1 (Dries van der Kleij as 6th). Outsiders Omega (Joost Talloen 7th), Asub (JF Krier 5th) and HOC (Joel Drygalski 12th) had to try to catch up some teams.

The gaps between the runners were still very small. For sure when Pieter Hendrickx (Kol1) made a small mistake at the 3rd control and Trol1 (Desmond Franssen) saw him running in front of him on the path towards control 4. But Hendrickx ran without mistakes and really fast during the rest of the race and succeeded to run the 2nd besttime of everybody. He ran away 2 more minutes from Franssen and the others. In the background Hamok2 (Thomas van der Kleij) overtook some teams and came in as 3rd (but couldn't get any closer to Kol and Trol). The next teams at the changeover were Omega (Wouter Leeuws), Hamok2 (Jeroen van der Kleij) and Asub (Christophe Bernard). Also Hoc (Johan Tinchant) gained some places and came in as 7th.

Yannick Michiels (Kol1) could enter the forest as anchor legrunner with 3min ahead of Sergey Fedatsenka (Trol1). Michiels made some small mistakes in the beginning of the race to make it even more tight. But in the end he was still 1min ahead and won his first Belgian title in elite class together with the Hendrickx-brothers. Trol succeeded to win the silver medal. Jeroen Hoekx (Hamok1) came into the finish as number 3 far ahead of Omega (Bart Delobel) and Hamok2 (Tom Herremans). Fabien Pasquasy (Hoc) ran the best time of everyone today and made the top6 complete.



CO Liege dominates the womens race:
In womens class the race immediately started with a big suprise. Almost all 1st leg runners made several mistakes, but specially big favourit Omega ruined their race here. Veerle Tulleneers came into the finishline as 2nd, but she didn't punch the last control. The other Omega runners (Kim Geypen and Miek Fabre) succeeded to finish as 1st, but the team was disqualified. So it was Co Liege with Muriel Vandermeulen who came into the finish as 1st after 1 leg. She was 5 minutes ahead of Vinciane Mulpas (Asub) and Karoline Andersen (Trol).

During the 2nd leg Asub succeeded to make the race exciting again. Annamarie Viriekko (Asub) ran 3 minutes faster than Fanny Tilkin (Co Liege1), who was still leading. Hamok with Greet Oeyen arrived at the changeover in 3rd position.

During the last leg we could expect a fight between Aline Hermans (Co Liege) and Catherine Hoofd (Asub). Both ran a good race, so Hermans succeeded to stay in front and took the Belgian title with Co Liege. Catherine Hoofd (Asub) finished as 2nd, 2 minutes behind Co Liege1 and 29 minutes before Co Liege2 (with Caroline Blockx).

The next important clash will be the Belgian long champs at Gruitroderbos. The participantslist is ready with 30 runners in H21E and 12 runners in D21E.

Khadaffi over de fysieke test

Het is nog niet de periode van het seizoen waarin wij traditioneel beginnen te klagen over de fysieke test, maar wat ons doorgemaild werd door een anonieme bron, want enkel aangekondigd op afgesloten gedeelten van het internet, en te brandend actueel en te goed gemaakt is om het niet op De Laatste Post een breder publiek te geven, is wat de Libische (ex-)leider Khadaffi te zeggen heeft over de fysieke testen.

Preview Belgian relay champs

In 5 days the Belgian relay championships will take place on the map Schrikkelberg. This map has been used only 1 time for a world ranking event in 2008. The terrain is really fast, Thomas van der Kleij won that previous race with 5.18min/km (results). But you also need power and strength, it will be uphill and downhill running whole the time (never steep climbs).

Technically it's not the most demanding terrain, but there are some tricky areas with a lot of details. For sure during a relay (with the extra stress) runners will make mistakes here.
An other important fact is the scale. After some negotiations and discussions, the decision has been made and the scale will be 1/7500. To my opinion a good decision for the runners to make this map and details readable.

Favourits in men elite:
If we take a look at the favourits in class H21E (named Hopen), we can take the results from last year as basics. The terrain was totally different in 2010 and a lot of runners made big mistakes. Actually only Trol could avoid big errors during that race and won the champs with 11min ahead of Hamok. Trol (Ken Peeters - Desmond Franssen - Sergey Fedatsenka) will run with exactly the same team as last year and will be again among the favourits. Actually Trol also wanted to register a strong 2nd team, but because Jeremy Genar and Michael Van Baelen have exams that team isn't as strong as they hoped.

The number 2 from 2010, 2009, 2008 and 2007 (Hamok) will have 2 strong teams at the startline. The first team (Jeroen Hoekx - Thomas van der Kleij - Dries van der Kleij) is stronger compared to last year, so they will fight for the victory for sure. Hamok2 (Benjamin Anciaux - Jeroen van der Kleij - Tom Herremans) can try to reach the finish as best 2nd team, which is also an honour during the tiomila-relay. The talented junior runners (Toon Melis and Tristan Bloemen) will still run in junior class instead of the open class. For your information: in 2006 Hamok only became 3rd...

Omega, winner of the relay champs 2009, is also able to fight for the podium. In 2009 the terrain was also really fast and they have exactly the same team now. Joost Talloen showed his good shape during the Flanders 3-days, Bart Delobel will be ready and also Wouter Leeuws started training again after his break. In total Omega has 4 teams competing in Hopen.

Kol, the 4th big Flemish team, is probably the team with the best runners among its members. Last year they had a really strong team, but made too many mistakes. This edition some good runners won't show up at the relay champs: no Pieter Hendrickx, no Yannick Michiels, no Geert Simkens,... Kol1 will be present with Gert Claes, Wannes Hendrickx and woc runner Tomas Hendrickx.

An other team (from the south of Belgium) which will be able to fight for the medals is HOC. The team from Fabien Pasquasy won the relay champs in 2008 and was 4th last year. The only question is which toprunners will be Pasquasy's teammates...

Also Asub (Bernard, Colomb, Krier, de Neyer brothers,...), Les Raptors (Van Gasse, Goubau,...), NSV Amel (Langer, Theiss and Lenges), Ardoc (Bastin and Hennes), CO Liege and OLV Eifel can create good teams. But we have no idea which runners have registered for this competition.

Favourits in Dopen:
In womens class Omega is the favourit as always. This edition Elisabeth Henkes will be absent in the team, but Miek Fabre - Kim Geypen - Veerle Tulleneers are also able to defend the title. The opponents will be for sure Asub (Mulpas, Hoofd and De Longueville) and Co Liege (Kosinska, VanderMeulen and Hermans), if they will have the same runners as last year. Or maybe Ardoc, Hamok, Kol or Trol can surprise and reach the podium.

Woc-star Jeroen Hoekx

In France they still remember that Jeroen Hoekx had beaten Thierry Gueorgiou in 2006 in Lille (the north of France). The effects of this victory and Hoekx popularity during WOC 2011 is visible on the photo below.

Maps and results from regional races in Belgium

Next weekend the Belgian champs will start (first relay, then interclub and as third the long distance champs), so today it was the last opportunity to test and evaluate the current shape. One regional competition took place in the north of Belgium (Lilse Bergen) and an other one in the south of Belgium (Lindscheid). The last map was also used for the 3rd national event in 2006 (won by Geert Simkens and Greet Oeyen in the elite classes). This edition Toon Melis took the victory.

België eindigt 25e op de aflossing

Vandaag vond als afsluiter (als we het banquet buiten beschouwing laten) de aflossing plaats op de WOC in Frankrijk. De 3 namen die België zouden vertegenwoordigen, waren reeds lang gekend enkel over de volgorde moest nog beslist worden.

Fabien Pasquasy werd aangeduid als startloper om zo de ploeg op de goede weg te zetten. Tot aan post 4 verliep alles naar wens en zat Fabien nog in de kopgroep op slechts 50 seconden van de voorlopige verrassende leider Israel (Gvozdev). Maar 2 posten later bedroeg de achterstand plots 10 minuten. Tijdens het vervolg van de wedstrijd kon Pasquasy fouten wel vermijden en hij eindigde uiteindelijk op een 24e positie (11min achterstand op Noorwegen).

Als 2e loper was het de beurt aan Tomas Hendrickx. Hij liep enkele minuten trager dan Fabien, moest 2 plaatsen prijsgeven en finishte op een 26e positie.

Jeroen Hoekx kreeg dit jaar 'de anchor leg' en was in strijd met landen zoals Portugal, Spanje, Ierland en Nieuw-zeeland. Hij liep 3 minuten trager dan Hendrickx (maar over een langere afstand) en finishte uiteindelijk als 25e.

Een prachtresultaat kunnen we dit moeilijk noemen. Binnen een week vindt in België het nationaal kampioenschap aflossing plaats. Dat is ineens ook de enigste mogelijkheid in dit land tijdens het hele seizoen voor de elites om rechtstreeks tegen elkaar te lopen. Nochtans is deze discipline wel de leukste en spannendste, dus laat de voorspellingen en pronostieken nu maar komen.

Het wereldkampioenschap werd bij de mannen trouwens gewonnen door Frankrijk (Adamski, Gonon en Gueorgiou) en bij de vrouwen was Finland aan het feest (Fincke, Rantanen en Kauppi).

Fabre en Pasquasy in sprint finale

Daniel Hubmann en Linnea Gustafsson waren de winnaars na een hectisch WK sprint. Tijdens de kwalificaties werden er 30 lopers gediskwalificeerd omdat ze naar verluid door een verboden gebied (grasveldje) naar de laatste post gelopen waren.

Onder hen ook Fabien Pasquasy die een knappe 4e tijd in zijn heat had laten noteren. Zo leek het alsof hij opnieuw de A-finale zou missen. Totdat volgend bericht verscheen: "The Jury has received protest from 4 nations and reinstated 3 runners , starting at the end of the field as there was not enough time to start them first: SEPPI Marco ITA 16:51, FRAZER Scott GBR 16:52 and PASQUASY Fabien BEL 16:53."

Uiteindelijk liepen dus zowel Miek Fabre en Fabien Pasquasy de finale. Miek finishte op een 28e positie (+1.59 tov. Gustafsson) en Fabien op een 34e plaats op 1'55 van winnaar Hubmann.

Ken Peeters wins 3rd stage at the Flanders 3-days

The last stage of the Flanders 3-days took place on a new map in Lommel (Heeserbergen). There are rumours that this map will be used for the Belgian middle champs in 2012, so today was a perfect test for the competitors.

Todays race was announced as a middle distance race, but it was more like an extended middle (8.42km for H21E). Joost Talloen, who won the previous stages, ran again a good race and was faster than his opponents for the general ranking. Only Ken Peeters was able to beat him. Yesterday the trol star came home from Finland (results Finland) and today he already won the H21E race in 44'44. Joost Talloen became 2nd, Jeremy Genar 3rd and Alexander Lubina (GER) 4th.

In class D21E Monika Depta won all stages. Kim Geypen traditionally finished in 2nd position (2min behind) and Lenka Vorackova 3rd (4min behind).



In general Talloen was the clear winner ahead of Desmond Franssen. Alexander Lubina still succeeded in beating his temporary teammate Karl Tiselieus for the 3rd position. In womens class nothing had changed. Monika Depta won ahead of Kim geypen and Lenka Vorackova.

Since the Flanders 3-days are over, it's time to look forward to the Belgian champs. In 2 weeks the Belgian relay champs will take place at Schrikkelberg and in 4 weeks it's time for the long champs at Gruitroderbos.

Joost Talloen leading the Flanders 3-days

While the biggest part of the orienteering world is focussing on WOC in France, Joost Talloen is showing his good shape at the Flanders 3days in the north of Belgium. He won the 1st and 2nd stage in elite class ahead of Desmond Franssen and Karl Tiselius (Swe). In women elite Monika Depta (POL) also succeeded in winning both stages. She was faster than Kim Geypen and Lenka Vorackova (CZE). You can see maps and results below.

Nederlands:
In Lommel vindt dit verlengd weekend de 3daagse van Vlaanderen plaats. In de reeks H21E domineerde Joost Talloen beide dagen. Vorige maand liet hij in Slovenië (tijdens de oocup) al enkele mooie resultaten noteren en nu bevestigt hij ook in eigen land zijn goede conditie. Hij won beide etappes voor Desmond Franssen en Karl Tiselius.

Morgen start hij de afsluitende middle distance met een bonus van 6 minuten. De overwinning kan hem nog moeilijk ontsnappen en daarom besloot hij deze namiddag ook nog deel te nemen aan de 1/8 triathlon van Lommel. Ook de nummer 3, Karl Tiselius, doet vertouwen op en liet de volgende opmerking noteren na de 2e etappe: " Yeah, I'm running good and improving! Watch out in the lead! ;)".

Bij de dames elite is het Monika Depta die voorlopig de lakens uitdeelt. Ook zij won de eerste en tweede dag telkens voor Kim Geypen en Lenka Vorackova.

Belgen op de WOC:
Ondertussen zijn in Frankrijk ook de wereldkampioenschappen aan de gang. Gisteren en vandaag werden de qualificaties gelopen voor de long en middle distance. Voorlopig leverde dit nog geen A-finales op, al strandde Fabien Pasquasy op een onfortuinlijke 16e plaats op 10sec van een qualificatie. Jeroen Hoekx en Miek Fabre waren beiden 5min te traag om zich voor de finale te plaatsen. Gisteren tijdens de lange afstand kwamen enkel Jeroen Hoekx en Tomas Hendrickx in actie.

Delaatstepost heeft Jeroen Hoekx gevraagd om enkele indrukken en ervaringen te delen met zijn trouwe fans en die willen we jullie niet onthouden . Na de long qualification: "Vandaag veel te veel fouten gemaakt. De kaart was eigenlijk eenvoudiger dan waar ik vorige maand op getraind had, maar er waren dus ook minder details om je naar een post te brengen... Ook lag het tempo altijd net iets te hoog en was ik dus niet fris genoeg om hem wel deftig te vinden. Tomas ook te veel fouten en dan nog zijn voet omgeslagen. Maar hetkomt wel in orde voor hem tegen de volgende wedstrijden. Morgen is het voor mij de middle qualificatie in moeilijker terrein. Hopelijk lukt het wat beter!"

Na de middle qualification: "vandaag de middle al wat beter gelopen. Toch nog te veel fouten gemaakt. 3 minuten naar de derde post. Tot op enkele meters van de post geweest en hem toch niet zien staan. Dan even een slecht paadje ingelopen en wat later recht naar de post toegelopen, maar dan toch afgeleid door een andere post en daar naar toe. Weer een minuutje kwijt. Maar dus zelfs als ik die fouten niet maak, zat de finale er niet in.
De lang van gisteren zat toch nog wel in de benen, hoewel ik mij zeker niet slecht voelde. Ik ben van plan om nu op de dagen van de finales nog de zesdaagse mee te lopen, als voorbereiding op de aflossing.
Fabien net buiten de finale. Hij mist de voorlaatste post nog met 2minuten, hoorde de speaker roepen dat hij moest sprinten, maar het was tegen Chris Forne en die is razendsnel in de sprint.
Miek miste in dezelfde zone als mij. Ze kwam bij mijn post uit, maar ze moest een andere hebben. De rest ging wel redelijk goed, maar 5 minuten waren verloren gegaan. Morgen model event van de sprint. De teamgenoten hebben al wat trainingen uitgestippeld en zijn zich daar nu op aan het concentreren."
