Elisabeth Henkes: A-finale @ JWOC

Deze week verzamelden alle internationale topjunioren zich in de Italiaanse bergen om hier het junioren wereldkampioenschap oriëntatielopen (JWOC) te beslechten. Er werd van start gegaan met de sprintafstand, gevolgd door de lange afstand, een rustdag en dan vandaag de kwalificatie voor de middle distance.

In het verleden werden Belgische juniorenploegen steeds geëvalueerd en afgerekend op het aantal A-finales (top60) dat ze behaalden. Sinds enkele jaren is de sprint distance aan het junioren WK toegevoegd, een extra mogelijkheid op meer A-finales (zeker voor de fysiek sterke Belgen).
Hieronder volgt een voorlopige balans van JWOC 2009:

Sprint distance:
Deze kortste vorm van oriëntatielopen werd door iedereen geapprecieerd en geprezen tijdens dit WK. De baanlegger en kaarttekenaar was een Italiaanse eliteloper (Emiliano Corona), die er volgens Jenny Lönnkvist (de uiteindelijke winnares) één van de meest uitdagende sprintwedstrijden uit haar leven had van gemaakt. Deze wedstrijd was totaal verschillend ten opzichte van de eerder eenvoudige sprintwedstrijden in Zweden. Uiteraard was Jenny tevreden met haar overwinning en prestatie, maar ze moest tijdens de wedstrijd toch enkele keren stilstaan om fouten te voorkomen. Ook Elisabeth Henkes werkte in de smalle straten van Mezzano een sterke wedstrijd af. Normaal is dit niet haar geliefkoosde discipline omdat ze beter uit de voeten kan op technisch moeilijk terrein, maar haar 46e plaats en eerste A-finale voor België mochten er zeker wezen!
Bij de mannen was het al Zwitserland wat de klok sloeg. De overwinning was voor de topfavoriet Matthias Kyburz. Hier vielen de Belgen eerder wat tegen en een verhoopte A-finale bleef uit. Benjamin Hofmans presteerde uiteindelijk het beste (75e), kortbij gevolgd door Jeremy Genar en Wouter Leeuws.

Long distance:
Na een nachtelijke stortbui werd in het koude Italië de lange afstand op gang geschoten. Deze discipline wordt nog steeds het meest gerespecteerd, dus aan motivatie geen gebrek bij de atleten. Ook Gustav Bergman, de koning van de scandinavische kampioenschappen (NOC), had dit begrepen en maakte er een ware demonstratie van in de herenreeks. Na 9.5km en meer dan 400m stijgen was hij in 65 minuten, meer dan 3 minuten sneller dan Soren Bobach (broer van..) en Martin Hubmann (ook broer van..). Bij de mannen liep Jeremy Genar technisch een sterke wedstrijd en miste maar nipt een top-60 plaats. De andere Belgen moesten verderop gezocht worden. Opvallend wel was de sterke prestatie van Sergey Fedatsenka (lid van Trol en verblijft in Nederland), hij eindigde hier op een knappe 24e plaats!
Bij de dames was het niet Jenny Lonnkvist die met de overwinning ging lopen (misschien de eerste tekenen van ziekte, want tijdens de sprint 2 dagen later ging ze zelfs niet meer van start). Wel de Deense Ida Bobach (ook zus van..) ging met de gouden medaille lopen. De twee Belgische deelneemsters kwamen nooit in het stuk voor en eindigde op verre afstand van een mogelijke top60 notering.

Middle distance:
Vandaag werd het eerste gedeelte van de middellange afstand gelopen, namelijk de kwalificatie. De top 20 van elke heat gaat door naar de A-finale. De andere lopers komen respectievelijk in de B en C-finales terecht.
Bij de heren maakten Matthias Kyburz (SUI), Matej Klusacek (CZE) en Martin Hubmann (SUI) indruk door elk hun heat te winnen en onder de 27'-grens te duiken. De Belgen konden weer niet verrassen met een A-finale, Gilles De Neyer eindigde het dichtste met een 35e plaats in heat 2.
Bij de dames gingen twee Tsjechische loopsters en Mari Jevne Arnesen (van Hamar uit Noorwegen) met de drie reeksoverwinningen aan de haal. Elisabeth Henkes zette een zeer knappe prestatie neer door 11e te worden en morgen in de A-finale van start te kunnen gaan!

De teller van het aantal A-finales staat ondertussen op 2 (dankzij Elisbath Henkes) en dit zal niet meer wijzigen. Hopelijk kunnen onze atleten morgen nog mooie prestaties neerzetten in de finales van de middle distance en overmorgen afsluiten met puike wedstrijden tijdens de aflossing.

Holmgard and van der Kleij win Belgian 3 Days

Thomas van der Kleij and Sofia Holmgard won the overall ranking of the Belgian 3 days 2009 in the elite classes. Holmgard also won the WRE on day 2. In the men's class, the number two in the overall ranking, Ondrej Pijak, of Slovakia, won the WRE.

Van der Kleij already took a good option on the overall victory by winning the first race in Mazy, with a 4 minute gap to the Kobra Bratislava runner Pijak and a further 4 minutes to Desmond Franssen. In the women's class, Holmgard had some troubles the first day, finishing 6,5 minutes after Greet Oeyen in 4th spot. Runner-ups were Sofie Herremans, one minute behind and Kim Geypen, 3,5 minutes down. The physically challenging terrain and the small contours of Mazy proved once again their claim to fame.

The WRE of day 2 was held on Opglabbeek. This is a sand dune area, but atypical, since the runability and visibility are both low. Hardly anyone could finish the course (map HE) without big mistakes. In the men's elite class, Pijak was the fastest runner, closing in on van der Kleij, who became second, by about two minutes. Pieter Hendrickx was just 6 seconds slower than van der Kleij and finished in third position. Holmgard had to push very hard until the end of the race to secure her victory, with Oeyen just 10 seconds behind. They had a comfortable 2 minute gap to Miek Fabré and Geypen, finishing in third and fourth place.

The winner of the overall ranking was going to be decided in the chasing start the last day at Saenhoeve. In the men's class (map), van der Kleij started two minutes ahead of Pijak and was never in any danger, Pijak being just a few seconds faster. Number three, Pieter Hendrickx also managed a good race and completed the winner's rostrum. But how different thing were in the women's class. Oeyen started first with a comfortable lead of 6,5 minutes, but she had some problems fighting the high temperatures and lost a lot of time. This allowed Geypen and Holmgard to pass her and decide the matters in a sprint, which was (deservedly, according to Geypen) won by Holmgard.

The tough terrain of the last day, made for a fair race, even though there was no forking. Except in the women 65 and 70, where a pack of 4 women got together and a photo finish had to decide the winner. That winner was clearly Magda Goffin. We also have photos of the decisive moment in the M45 class, Frans Laenen and François Jacobs arrived at the spectator control together, but Laenen had lost his glasses in the forest and started the final loop in the opposite direction.

Belgian EYOC, JWOC and WOC news

The summervacation in Belgium started a few days ago, so a lot of local orienteers made plans to run some international o-competitions. Most of the Belgian non-junior athletes will run the 3 days of Belgium next weekend. In men's elite class 33 runners have registered, among them the best Belgian runners and some foreigners. In D21E 11 runners will take part at this nice event.

One week later, a lot of Belgian (elite) runners will move to France (Fontaineblau) to participate at the 3 days of France (entry list).

But the program of our national junnior runners look different:

EYOC 2009:

The junior runners, who didn't make the jwoc-team, are already in Serbia now. Today the model event takes place and tomorrow the real competition will start with a long distance race.

The strongest opponents are all in Italy, because of JWOC and also some strong countries are absent. So we can hope for nice results from the Belgian runners; specially Yannick Michiels is in good shape at this moment.

JWOC 2009:
The main goal of all junior runners this season, should be the junior world championships, which will take place in Italy this year. In the rocky mountains 8 runners will represent Belgium and will try to run some A-finals. Specially Wouter Leeuws and Elisabeth Henkes proved in the past that they are ready for some nice international results. In 4 days (Juyly 6th) the competition will begin with a sprint distance in a little village (Mezzano). Long distance, middle distance and relay will also take place the next days.

WOC 2009:
In august, the best Belgian elite runners will run the World champs in Hungary. Also about the team we can announce some news. The decissions about the different disciplines have been made:

Men:
Fabien Pasquasy: Long + Middle + *
Thomas van der Kleij: Long + Middle + *
Pieter Hendrickx: Long + Sprint
Jeroen Hoekx: Middle + Sprint

*One runner is allowed to run 3 distances, so Fabien or Thomas will also run sprint distance. But this decission isn't made already. Also the relay team will be made after the individual races in Hungary.

Women:
Greet Oeyen: Long + Middle + Sprint
Vinciane Mulpas: Long +Middle + Sprint
