EOC Results sprint: Belgium

(Nederlandse versie onderaan) A few Belgian runners (2 men and 2 women)are representing our country at the European Championships in Latvia this week. Today the first races took place: a sprint distance. The qualifications took place in a city-area, the finals were organised in a more technical challenging area.

Qualifications:
Unfortunately, none of the Belgians managed to qualify for the sprint A Final, as only the first 17 runners in each heat seemed to have qualified. It is remarkable to see that both Belgian men and women ran a similar race, with almost the same time behind their heat winners. Bart Delobel missed the A final with only 2 seconds. His race was pretty good, in total he lost only 15-20 seconds. At the end he punched a control too fast, and had to return 2 meters. So actually he probably lost the A final at that moment. Fabien Pasquasy did also a good run, but had to run in a very strong heat. Some other good and famous runners didn't reach the A final.
Damien Renard, the French runner didn't qualify for A final. He also had some problems with the map. So even in a big championship a sprint race in a city can cause discussions. The problems was a missing permanent tent on the map and the entrance in a fence (see the picture above). More datailed information about the 'unfairness' you can read on his website.

Finals:
In the afternoon only 2 Belgians ran the B-final, but they seem to have saved their energy for the upcoming races later this week.
In the Mens A-final: the new champion in the men's class once again is Emil Wingstedt from Sweden, who won spirnt distance in the brevious EOC in Estonia two years ago. The silver medal was taken by Daniel Hubmann (SUI) and the bronze went to Adrey Khramov (RUS).
In women class it was a strong battle among three runners as all of them finished in 6 second interval. The Europan champion 2008 in sprint distance was Ann Margarethe Hausken, leaving behind Heli Jukkola (FIN) and Helena Jansson (SWE).

Nederlands:

Deze week vertegenwoordigen enkele Belgen de driekleur op het Europees Kampioenschap in Letland. Vandaag vond de Sprint plaats, met een kwalificatie in een stadsgebied en een finale (A en B) op een technischere kaart later op de dag.

Jammer genoeg slaagde geen enkele Belg er in om de finale te bereiken in het sterke startersveld. Voor resultaten zie boven. Zowel de Belgische heren als vrouwen liepen schijnbaar een gelijkaardige race, aangezien ze op gelijkaardige afstand achter de winnaar van hun heat waren. Fabien liep in een zeer sterke reeks, waar heel wat bekende namen sneuvelden. Bart verloor in totaal 15 a 20 seconden. Net voor het einde punchte hij een post te snel, zodat hij enkele meters moest terug lopen om opnieuw te punchen. Uiteindelijk verloor hij hier meer dan 2 seconden en bijgevolg de A finale.
Bij de qualificatie bleken er ook enkele problemen te zijn met onder andere een doorgang in een omheining (zie foto) en een permanente tent die niet op de kaart stond. Meer informatie op de website van Damien Renard.

De resultaten in de B-finale deze namiddag waren niet echt relevant: Fabien kwam niet aan de start en Bart pakte deze wedstrijd vermoedelijk als een training op om geen krachten te verspillen voor de rest van de week. Bij de dames kwam Vinciane Mulpas aan de start, en eindigde op 01:39 van de winnares in deze B-finale.
De A-finale werd bij de mannen gewonnen door de sprintkoning Emil Wingstedt. Bij de vrouwen ging de overwinning dan weer naar Hausken.
