Belgium: sprint championship

This morning (25/05), the national championship sprint orienteering took place in Lommel city (the northeast of Belgium). The competition was organised very well: 2 speakers, a spectatorscontrol, a good map, a nice coursetting, up to date splittime information, the press was present,… The organisers wanted to make the competition enjoyable for the spectators. So they set up a programming and the competition started with the junior classes.


Ready for JWOC:
In the mens junior class, a lot of strong youth runners were present. Most of them are training hard at the moment, because JWOC is comming closer. Today, Wouter Leeuws showed again that he’s physically very strong. In the beginning, he made a little mistake, but finally he finished in 1st position. Yannick Michiels (not in the JWOC-team) became 2nd and Jeremy Genar 3th. Jochen Verdeyen, a very strong sprint-distance-runner, took it easy and became 6th.
In the womens junior class Elisabeth Henkes run very strong and won with a big margin. Sien Verdeyen became 2nd and Katharina Hekes 3th.

Waiting for a new best time:
In the elite class, some runners were absent because EOC starts next week (Men: Fabien Pasquasy and Bart Delobel. Women: Veronique Bastin and Vinciane Mulpas). But in womens class the participant field was still very strong. A junior runner surprised all the elite runners and took the victory. Miek Fabre is back in good shape after suffering an ankle injury. She was 20 seconds faster than Greet Oeyen (who actually was qualified for EOC). Veerle Tulleneers became 3th.
So far, so good. In the mens elite class, the best ranked runners got logically the last starttimes (to make the competition more exciting). The time-interval between the several runners was 1 minute at the start. Frank Buytaert, a physically very strong runner (best time on the marathon: 2h33) started early and made a very good performance. He made nearly no mistakes and run 21’15 (3930m). Other runners tried to beat him, but nobody succeeded. It was waiting for a new best time, because the best runners started at the end.

The startplace: in the middle of a market place

Annulation:
Like we mentionned, the competition took place in a city. The organising commitee had an agreement with the citygovernment and several landowners. But during the mens elite race, one citizen decided to close a passage (a big door). She also took away the control and hided it. Because of this action, several runners had to run a roundabout route and searched for the hidden control. It was very awkward for the organisation, they tried to organise a perfect race. Normally they would have been praised for their effort, but this was a disappointment and made the competition unfair. Aftewards the jury discussed about the option to cancell legs 2-3 and 3-4 (control 3 was disappeared). But finally they decided to cancell the whole race. A lot of strong runners searched together for the 3th control. So afterwards they continued their race in little groups. That’s the reason for cancelling the H21E race. Most of the elite runners agreed with this decision.

Future?
At the prize giving ceremony, the organising club Hamok handed over 3 unofficials medals for the runners with the best time (without legs 2-3 and 3-4) because the press was present. Thomas Hendrickx was 1st, Jeroen Hoekx 2nd and Michel Bastin 3th. But nobody is national sprint champion 2008 in this class at the moment. In the resultlist below, you can see the results of the total times (without cancelling any legs).
Hopefully the Belgian championship sprint H21E will take place on an other date this season. So the EOC runners also can try to win it. An other remarkable fact is that the competitons in the cities often causes problems. Crossing forbidden walls, fences and hedges caused a lot of discussions. And by placing controls in a privat area, it causes a bigger chance for paople taking them away. Maybe organising the sprint competition in a forrest or public garden is a better idea? But in these cases, it’s difficult to promote the orienteersports.

Op zondag 25 mei vond in het stadscentrum van Lommel het Belgisch kampioenschap sprint plaats. Alle voorbereidingen verliepen zoals het een BK waardig is. Kaart was prima getekend volgens de verplichte sprintnormen. Ook de omloop (baanlegger was Wim Hoekx) was dik in orde. Verder was er ook een kijkpost met beeldschermen met splittimes om de toeschouwers op de hoogte te houden. Dit alles werd dan nog eens becommentarieerd door 2 speakers: Jeroen van der Kleij en Jos Thijs (wiens fichebak met info over alle deelnemers wel zeer uitgebreid moet zijn). Geen vuiltje aan de lucht dus.

Tot één Lommelse dame er genoeg van had. Ze besloot om een openstaande poort (ook zo aangeduid op de kaart) te sluiten. Haar timing was niet bepaald ideaal vermits er enkel nog “favorieten” voor de Belgische titel moesten passeren.
Gevolg was dat enkele lopers via een omweg nog tot aan hun 3e controlepunt geraakten. Maar de dame was nog niet tevreden en besloot om de post dan maar in een garage te verstoppen. Op dit ogenblik moesten nog een tiental atleten het punt passeren. Enkelen zochten vervolgens zonder succes naar het controlepunt en liepen verder zonder te punchen. Jeroen Hoekx vond de post uiteindelijk terug in een garagebox (en plaatste hem terug). Maar het kwaad was al geschied. Enkele lieten hier hun hoofd hangen. Anderen konden (op 2 posten na) in groep de rest van het parcours afleggen.

Een zeer complexe, onvermijdbare zaak waar niemand van de organisatie schuld bij treft maar het resultaat kan niet langer fair genoemd worden. Na lang vergaderen, wikken en wegen besloot de wedstrijdjury om het resultaat van de heren open (H21E) te annuleren. Een beslissing waar trouwens de meeste lopers van deze categorie zich wel in konden vinden. Indien er nog een nieuwe potentiële organisator gevonden wordt, kan het BK sprint H21E hopelijk nog op een latere datum doorgaan (met dan liefst ook het EOC-team bij).

In de andere omlopen verliep alles perfect, zoals het hoorde.
Bij de dames open won de Leuvense Miek Fabré. Miek is nog steeds junior en toont dat ze klaar is voor JWOC. Op de tweede plaats eindigde Greet Oeyen. Greet staat ervoor bekend dat ze het meer van haar verfijnde orientatietechniek moet hebben dan van de pure loopsnelheid. Derde stek ging naar een tweede omega atlete, namelijk Veerle Tulleneers.

Bij de junior(e)s gingen de bloemen naar Elisabeth Henkes en Wouter Leeuws.
